DO YOU KNOW THE TROLLEY PROBLEM?

It’s a famous ethical dilemma posed by Phillipa Foot. Imagine a trolley is hurtling toward 5 innocent bystanders. You can pull a lever and save the five, but in doing so you choose to kill one.

Now, let’s imagine the trolley is a river, the mighty Mississippi. Instead of 5 innocent people, our speeding streetcar is aimed at 20-30% of our economy - which would affect millions, possibly billions, of lives. It would cause the city of New Orleans to all but collapse, and cripple an entire culture. However, If you pull this lever?

You would flood communities. End a way of life. You would force indigenous peoples and low-income societies out of their homes without a place to go. It would kill fish and wildlife leaving people without a way to live off the land. The worst part? There’s no guarantee it would work.

Set in southern Louisiana, The Ties That Bind Us is a documentary exploring the economic, social, and ethical problems of our time. We sit down with scientists, local experts, and the ones affected by their decisions to discover what happens when climate change finally forces our hand.
